If you鈥檙e in the know in the high tech world, you鈥檒l recall the shift from wired networks to wireless ones was at full throttle about 10 years ago. Wireless networks were replacing miles of blue cabling with no complex plumbing required. New wireless technology was even going to replace the cabling between your printer, mouse, keyboard and speakers! Today that is a reality and the technology has filtered into the tuning world with modules going wireless like this new product from AEM, the X-WiFi Wideband and EGT Module.
WiFi? Seriously? Yes, we are serious because this unit actually sends the signals from the sensors to your laptop or smartphone, without cables. The unit accommodates three channels, two for EGT and another for the wideband O2 sensor. The EGT signals are sent via optional K-Type sensors, which measure temperatures from 0-1800掳F. Included in the kit is one Bosch wideband O2 sensor that reads AFR on all types of fuels such as: gas, methanol, ethanol and E85. The accuracy of the Bosch sensor measures within 0.1AFR for tuning the most power on the safe side of the tune.
The sensors connect to the module, which converts the data into wireless signals. From there the data also runs along the 0-5V serial data stream听 to the AEM EMS standalone, datalogger or digital dash via USB or hardwired. The values can also be acquired by any wireless device or laptop to get a read on how the engine is performing, even while standing next to the car while it鈥檚 on a dyno. The signal has a range of around 100 feet and all of the AFR and EGT readings can be viewed on any standard browser- no extra software needed. As with any wireless device, it can be configured for security using the WEP standard with an encrypted password.
AEM has fast become the benchmark for acquiring data and engine management. It only makes sense that the logical progression was to go with fewer wires; more simplicity and interaction with prolific modern听devices like the iPhone. Smartphone users can mount their device and use it just like they would a gauge. The X-WiFi module can be mounted in a remote location inside the car with less wiring and clutter.
Also new from AEM is the Inline UEGO Wideband module. Now in an impossibly small format, the UEGO wideband is a compact module that sends all of the AFR signals where required. Whether it is used to tune an AEM EMS or displayed on an AEM gauge, the unit requires no laptop to display data. Included is the high quality Bosch sensor that gives accurate readings to within 0.1AFR for all types of fuel including: gasoline, E85, Ethanol and Methanol.
A perfect compliment to the AEM X-WiFi unit and Inline UEGO are the AEM Analogue SAE & Metric Gauges. Many purists prefer the sweeping analogue versus the digital readout and AEM has responded with a huge line of gauges and styles. The AEM Analogue gauges feature 7-color LED displays and interchangeable bezels and faces to tailor the look and backlighting to the interior of your car. All AEM Analogue gauges use high precision sensors for the most critical of engine data.
